Astor Postgraduate Workshop 2025 with Professor Adeeb Khalid

This postgraduate seminar will focus on Professor Khalid’s Central Asia: A New History from the Imperial Conquests to the Present (Princeton 2021), which is the best introductory work on this often neglected region. We will focus on two main themes: the connections drawn in the book to broader global developments (as an antidote to Central Asia often being considered exotic and hence sui generis); and the attempt at writing an account of Central Asia that integrates the history of the eastern (“Chinese”) and western (“Russian”) parts of Central Asia. We will discuss the various challenges, methodological and political, involved in such an approach to the history of Central Asia.
